On Friday, St. Regis Mohawk School first graders were given a presentation about diabetes, eating healthy and being active. Heather Pontius, Calandra Curleyhead and Heather Garrow from the Let’s Get Healthy Program were asked by first grade teachers to come in as a part of the nutrition and exercise unit.
Heather, Calandra and Heather first read a story to the kids called “Through the Eyes of the Eagle.” The story talks about a boy named Rain That Dances who learns from the Eagle about how to prevent diabetes by eating healthier and exercising. Then the three ladies demonstrated yoga moves and had the kids do them too. The kids had a blast doing moves like the grasshopper, elephant and flamingo, while also learning about the importance of deep breathing. The presentation ended with a resounding thank you from the kids.
