A Voice from the Eastern Door
Next Meeting May 11
Ken Sharrow can remember his father playing in a Softball League in the 1960’s that went all the way to the championship. He remembers when Alma Ransom, Lena Martin, Greta Barnes among others, playing with his dad. For a couple of years now he has been thinking of starting a softball league with these memories being a driving force. This year he made it happen, forming the Akwesasne Co-ed Softball League. Ken said he’s been “getting a lot of help. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.” His helpers include the likes of Tracey Sharrow, Diane Lazore and Waylon Cook.
The league already has 7 teams and is still taking individuals and teams. Teams include 5 women and 5 men, and registration is $20 per player. Teams are also looking for sponsors. Louie and Doreen Mitchell at Akwesasne Sports are helping out already, along with MCA’s Dept. of Tech Services, which is helping redo the field at the Akwesasne Mohawk School with topsoil and sand.
Ken hopes to have games at AMS, Buck White’s Field, St. Regis Rec. and maybe the St. Regis Mohawk School. He is hoping for Sunday games.
For more information call Ken at 613-937-1745. There will be a meeting on Saturday, May 11th at the St. Regis Rec. at 6pm to hopefully put the final touches on what he hopes to be a great summer of softball.
