A Voice from the Eastern Door
For four years, Koi Express Japanese Hibachi Steakhouse has been bringing Japanese food to Akwesasne and surrounding areas. In fact, owner Karen Adams says people from all over come to Koi, from Plattsburgh to Gouverneur, and some declare their sushi is better than what they’ve had in New York City. And from the looks of it on Wednesday that may be right because it was BUSY!
Owners Jake and Karen Adams have expanded the menu substantially since opening. They have added a buffet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, which you can also get to go by the pound. Karen said, “The buffet is going really well, we change the dishes often and put peoples’ favorites on it. We are always doing new dishes and specials too. We have a great group of staff right now, including 4 sushi chefs.”
Why have they been here, when other restaurants have come and gone? Karen believes it’s because they are different. “Everyone’s doing pizza and subs, we’re different.”
Koi had specials all day on Wednesday to celebrate their 4 years, and were also giving away prizes like free soda, t-shirts, bingo cards and more, along with a promotion on Facebook.
Every customer I talked to praised Koi. Brandon David, PJ Burns and Rob White come for the buffet and Rob added, “It’s certainly not our first time.” I caught Cynthia Lord there and she said, “I’m one of their most loyal customers. I’m there just about everyday. Back in 2011, when I broke my ankle, I still managed to make it over everyday and I live in Cornwall.”
Connie Clausen brings her 91-year-old friend Mary Weinert to Koi a lot, and believes she’s Koi’s oldest fan. Connie said, “We come here all the time, we are in love with this place. We came here one day and got addicted, Mary wants to come here all the time, it’s our favorite restaurant.”
