A Night of Enchantment; The Me and My Guy Dance

Through the combined efforts of a group of community members and agency representatives the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment sponsored what will probably become a yearly event with the “Me and My Guy Dance.” The dance was held on a sunny afternoon on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the St. Regis Mohawk School from 4:30 to 6:30pm. The Coalition has organized and hosted a number of pro-social community events such as Girls Night Out, Red Ribbon Week, Diva Challenge, Cookies and Crafts with Santa and many other events that support healthy youth, individuals and families events encouraging healthy lifestyles.

Saturday afternoon proved to be extra special for a number of young ladies and even younger girls from the age of four to the age of eleven. The entrance way and gym of the St. Regis Mohawk School was transformed into a ballroom fit for a princess and many a princesses arrived and danced the afternoon away with their special date. The princesses’ date for the night could have been their father, grandfather, a special uncle, or even a friend of the family. Some arrived with two princesses in their arms, literally speaking. It didn’t take long for the princesses to take to the dance floor, but for some men it took a little longer to get up and dance. When a waltz was played, everyone was on the dance floor holding their special girl. It was a night the girls will always remember – the night they dressed in a gown, had their hair curled and nails painted, it was the night “My Guy” took “Me” to this enchanted place made just for them alone.
