A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Wednesday April 17th, there were events that caused a very enjoyable day shared with students, teachers, family and friends alike. At the Utica College on this beautiful sunny day, many people gathered to witness a rededication of a Peace Tree Planting done by the late Jake Swamp already 25 years ago. In the same afternoon, there was a “big” lacrosse game between Utica and Ithaca. The two events involved students, five of which are Ahkwesahsronen, and as well are members of the Utica Pioneer Lacrosse team. Ithaca came out on top by a score of 15-4.
This game took place among the beautiful Gaetano Stadium surrounded by green grass and hills. The players from here are Trey Adams, Trent Jacobs, Korin Sunday, Cory Thompson and Onondaga player Andrew Jemison. The Ithaca team ranks 20th nationally and Utica holds a record of 7-5-3 in the Empire 8 Conference. In this game Trey Adams held off 11 attempted goals by Ithaca. He is performing very well this season and adds a lot of agility in nets to help his team the Pioneers. Ithaca Bomber goalie Scott Sidman also stopped 11 shots. The Pioneers will finish their season against St. John Fisher College on April 27th.
It was an enjoyable day while watching the talents of our young men. Trey (G) and Trent (M) attended Brewster last year and Korin (D) and Cory (M) hail from Salmon River Central. Andrew Jemison came from Hagersville, Ont.
Congratulations were in order for Trent Jacobs at this game as he was named “College Male Athlete of the Week.” Trent has displayed very impressive performances for the Pioneers in his last two games while playing his position as a midfielder. Trent is a freshman at Utica College and has already shown his abilities to be one of the top players. Against Houghton College and Stevens Institute of Technology, Trent earned 7 points with 5 goals and 2 assists. So far in his 11 games this season, he is second on the team with 26 points and third with 20 goals. Trent is also in the top 20 for goals in this season in the Empire 8 Conference and third with a 55.6 shots percentage.
Congratulations Trent as successful Pioneer!
