A Voice from the Eastern Door

Ironworkers Ready Themselves for the Next Election

Local 440 Ironworkers are getting ready for the next election; they recently held a chicken BBQ on Friday, April 19, 2013. The kitchen and BBQ pits at the American Legion were busy with at least 10 volunteers working. The money raised at this fundraiser will be used for expenses for members to take part in the upcoming election in June. A smaller delegation will be sent to nominate members for positions of the President, Vice President, Business Officer, Business Manager and five positions for the executive board and 3 positions for the examining board. Newly elected 440 officials will hold their positions for the next four years.

Business Manager Robert Cole explained that a bus will be rented to transport Local 440 members to Utica, which will save on gas, wear on cars and in the end it helps to save the environment in riding together. He mentioned things were slow during the 2008 recession but remains hopeful for the spring and summer, and the number of jobs opening up in the Utica and Albany area. In the last few years he has seen the number of ironworkers rise, as well as a number of ironworkers returning back to work. The Local 440, as well as other Ironworker’s unions run an apprentice program to help train and teach new ironworkers. He looks forward to having representatives at the next Job Fair in Akwesasne. The Local 440 can be found on Facebook.
