A Voice from the Eastern Door
The 41st Annual Raisin River Canoe Race is the longest paddling event in Eastern Ontario and was held Sunday, April 14th 2013. The 24 kilometer (16 mile) race started in St. Andrews West at 11:00am and finished in Williamstown at 2:00pm.
It took Bruce Boots and Arnold Printup III, 2:58:46 minutes to place 35th out of 153 overall. They raced in the Men’s Recreation category and they beat last year’s time of 3:07:09.
Bruce Boots described the race. He said that they experienced all four seasons in the first 30 minutes of the race; it rained, it hailed, it snowed and then sunshine. The water was running too fast to shoot over the Martinstown Dam so they had to portage over 200 yards. The rapids were bigger than last year and the current was faster. They witnessed two canoes tipped over and 2 or 3 paddling to shore. The water was extremely cold, as the ice had just gone out the week before.
The race is sponsored yearly by the Raisin River Conservatory Authority.
Categories include Pro Class, 17’ Open, Men’s Recreation, Women’s Recreation, Mixed Recreation, Adult (over 18)/Youth (under 17), Student Boys, Student Girls, Student Mixed, Kayaks, and Masters (women over 45/men over 50).
