A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Friday, Steven Kellogg, prolific author and illustrator of more than 110 books, gave a presentation for the students at the St. Regis Mohawk School. Kellogg presented to each of the grades, using two pads of paper he would draw out a story. Particularly cute were the stories of Pinkerton and his feline cohort Second Hand Rose, both actual pets Kellogg owned, and part of a successful series based on the dog, Pinkerton. Kellogg even said he “loves drawing Pinkerton so much, he even sneaks him into works where he doesn’t belong,” like on illustrations he does for other authors. Kellogg drew a wonderful story about little mice socialites, turned sailors.
Kellogg then gave a powerpoint presentation about the many books he has created, and the many languages they have been translated into. During the presentation a story was told as well. One book I saw a picture of, Pecos Bill, I can remember from my second grade class, and that was 25 years ago. Kellogg brought the children into his imaginative world, made possible by his wonderful illustrations. After the presentation, many students lined up with scraps of paper, or came to ask for one of the pictures he drew, and Kellogg told them that all of the pictures he drew were autographed and given to the entire school, along with autographed pictures for each of the students.
Kellogg said, I have been an author and illustrator for all of my adult life, and will continue to do it for many, many, years to come.”
