Arquette Family Evicted In Dispute With Housing

The Arquette Family, Phillip and Donna, are fighting to keep their home. In a dispute with Akwesasne Housing Authority, the Arquette family was evicted over a past due balance of over $2000, but feel they were unfairly removed from the home they have lived in, and paid for, for over 22 years. This is especially relevant as hard times have hit us all, and some of us are more susceptible than others to financial strain.

In attempts to come to an arrangement with the Akwesasne Housing Authority, the family was told that no partial payments would be allowed, and after being evicted, locks were changed and the floors in the home were torn up and redone. The Akwesasne Housing Authority then began showing the house with a price tag of $80,000, far more than the house is worth according to the Arquettes. To add to their frustrations, the original agreement was for ¾ of an acre, and now the property is being sold with 1.13 acres, which is for the entire property.

“A lot of people think we have money because we received a settlement when our son died,” Phillip Arquette said. “But we used all that money for the funeral, and the rest we put into a fund for the grand kids,” he added.

So, in an effort to do what they can to save their house, the family has placed no trespassing signs on the property, and also had not for sale signs, which were removed by the Akwesasne Housing Authority. The Arquettes are also willing to publicly say that they are willing to make a partial payment and have the remainder of their loan added to the difference, as coming up with the full amount is difficult right now.

A late update to the story is the family was able to meet with the chiefs on Monday and an appointment was made for them with the Akwesasne Housing Authority.

The Akwesasne Housing Authority would not comment on the issue due to confidentiality concerns.
