Ty Thompson Leads UAlbany Great Danes Over Canisius 12-11

Buffalo, NY - Ty Thompson led the UAlbany Great Danes with 3 goals and an assist to beat the Canisius Golden Griffins 12-11.

The UAlbany offense started out of the gates quickly with a goal by Tim Cox off a pass from Lyle Thompson in a man up opportunity. The Canisius Golden Griffins scored quickly as Tim Edwards scored his first of the day to even the score 1-1. A fast series of nice passes up the field led UAlbany’s Will Fuller to convert the pass from Ty Thompson into a goal and put UAlbany back into the lead 2-1.

With the 2nd quarter beginning, Canisius struck quickly as Austin Romantic evened the score for a second time. But the game wasn’t tied long as UAlbany’s Ryan Feuerstein beat Canisius’ Nick Carrasco to put UAlbany back on top 3-2. Canisius was strong at the face-offs as just 10 seconds after UAlbany scored they started on a series of face passes which they converted to goals to put themselves up 5-3 going into halftime.

The Great Danes regained their poise and composure at the half and scored two quick goals as Will Fuller caught a pass from Lyle Thompson, and Will Stenberg scored an unassisted goal to even the score 5-5. Canisius jumped back into the game quickly as Vince Gavino and Brandon Bull both scored to regain the two goal lead on UAlbany. Ty Thompson ignited the Great Danes’ offense as he scored a man up goal at 8:42. Thompson scored again to even the score 7-7 but UAlbany’s Feuerstein and John Maloney chipped in two more goals to regain the lead and make it 9-7 as the 3rd quarter time expired.

John Maloney added his second goal of the day to start off the 4th quarter but Canisius spoiled the Great Danes’ scoring rally as Cody Soberanes scored and Tim Edwards scored his third goal of the game to close the gap to only one goal. But UAlbany was still determined to win this game and retained the lead as Stenberg added his second of the day to push the Great Danes’ lead to 11-9. Canisius’ Tim Edwards scored again as he chipped in his fourth of the afternoon, but Ty Thompson jumped on the ball quickly and score an unassisted goal to stay in front. Tim Edwards scored his fifth goal of the match but it was too late as the Great Danes held on for the win.

The Great Danes will be back in action Saturday @ Bryant for a 1 p.m. game.
