Clute and Patnode Tackle Lead Roles In SRC's "The Sound Of Music"

Salmon River High School will be alive with the ‘Sound of Music’ this weekend when the school’s drama department performs the ever-popular musical. On Friday, March 15, the school theater department will begin a two-night run of “The Sound of Music” in the auditorium starting at 7:30 p.m.

The play will feature drama department veterans in the lead roles. Sophomore Kayla Clute will portray Maria Ranier and senior David Patnode as Captain Georg von Trapp.

The show creates scenes from the 1959 musical by Rogers and Hammerstein complete with performances of well-known songs such as “The Sound of Music,” “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and “Do-Re-Mi.”

The story takes place in Salzburg, Austria in the late 1930’s before WWII. Maria starts out as a nun but does not fit into the Abbey where she lives. While she means well, she always seems to be in trouble. The Mother Abbess, played by Ciera Jock, sends her away to be the governess for the seven children of a withdrawn and embittered widower Captain von Trapp. His uncooperative children have been raised by a string of governesses whom could not cope with the demanding task. Maria wins them over with her charm and her love of music and she teaches the children to sing. The Captain’s friend Max, played by Shawn Brown, wants the children to sing at the local festival, but the Captain at first refuses. He hosts a dinner party where he begins to notice his singing governess and they both realize that they have feelings for each other. Confused by these feelings, Maria flees back to the Abbey. While there, Mother Abbess helps Maria to realize that there is a plan for her and that she needs to follow her dreams. At the same time, Nazi sympathizers are moving into Austria and are preparing to take over and the Captain is expected to join them. In the end the von Trapps enter the singing contest as a way to escape the Nazis.

“I chose this production because it was a performance opportunity for middle school as well as high school students,” commented first year director David Bish. “We even have a first grader, Ansley Hill, from the Mohawk School to play Gretl, the youngest von Trapp. I also love this show because it’s about family and the importance of following your dreams.”

Shows will be on Friday, March 15th and Saturday, March 16th starting at 7:30 each night. Tickets for the show will be available at the door for $6.00 per person or $20.00 for a family of four.
