A Voice from the Eastern Door

Akwesasne Children's Powwow Held at AMS

On Saturday, March 9, the Native North American Travelling College held a Children’s Powwow at the Akwesasne Mohawk School. With the intention of holding a yearly event that will occur every March, children ranging from infants to 13 participated in the event. According to Russell Roundpoint, the event was mildly competitive, but the focus was to have all the participants come away winners.

On hand were craft venders situated in the hallway beside the gym. Also, Koi Express was there serving their chicken and rice bowls for a reasonable 5 dollars. Other notables were fruit and vegetable cups for the kids, buffalo burgers and strawberry drink.

The host drum for the powwow was Red Tail Spirit Singers and Big Thunder, and Lance Delisle was MC for the event. Filfred Tahy led the grand entry as the Lead Veteran dancer as well as Kahawinetha Thompson as the head female and Dudes Thompson was the head male dancer.

The Akwesasne Children’s Powwow was a wonderful success and a positive event within the community. For more photos see the Native North American Travelling College’s facebook page.
