A Voice from the Eastern Door
This week we were asked to housesit for grandpa. Big brother was so excited to spend a whole week sleeping somewhere besides at home. To him it’s like a vacation. Little brother was a bit harder to sell. He’s all about his routine and his own home with his own stuff. By the second night big brother was settled in and ready for bed way ahead of schedule. Little brother sat on the couch crying to go home. He was so sad and being a little under the weather didn’t help. All I could do was snuggle with him and sing. After he calmed down he couldn’t fall asleep. He tossed and turned but couldn’t get comfortable. He said he wanted his bed and his room. Big brother had no trouble getting rest. He was snoring for close to two hours before Little brother finally was out.
By the third day little brother was asking “peas can I go to my home mumma?” as soon as he woke up. I’m sure the cold he had was making him feel out of sorts and since he already felt out of place he couldn’t let it go. After breakfast he wanted to go. By lunch he was walking around in his rain boots looking at the clock. I know elders who are set in their ways but my four year old is definitely just like them, set in his routine. I have a feeling if I didn’t watch him so closely he probably would have tried to walk home. I’m not a big fan of bribing but I tried it this week to see if I could get little brother to just let go of the incessant heartbroken pleas. Offers of gogurt, juice and even candy were all turned down with a mean look and a firm “no me want home”. Big brother being the total opposite of old man grumpy would get off the bus with a big smile. He has no problem getting himself a snack and finding something to play or do at grandpa’s house. As for myself I like to change things up, and being closer to the brothers’ schools means mommy gets to sleep in. I’m definitely enjoying my stay but I can’t speak for the other two little house guests.
