The Massena girls suffered a disappointing loss in their bid to earn a three-peat in the Section 10 Overall Championship Tuesday night in Maxcy Hall at Potsdam State. The Canton Golden Bears, Class C Champions, earned the bragging rights when they pulled out a 41-39 win with only 11.8 seconds left in regulation time. It was an exciting battle throughout the game.
Canton came out strong in the first and opened the game with a 14-6 run until senior Alisha Jacobs fired through a three-pointer to cut the Canton lead 14-9 after the first quarter.
In the second, the Lady Raiders showed great poise as they sustained an 11-4 run to take a 20-18 lead at half time. Senior Marissa Manley supplied six of the 11 points in that quarter.
Canton came blazing out from the locker room ready to play and went on a 5-0 run to take a 23-22 lead. The Lady Raiders stepped up to the challenge when Dominique Valancius buried a three, had a steal and a layup to put Massena in the lead 27-23. The Lady Raiders ended the third with their largest lead of the game, 35-29.
In the fourth quarter the Lady Golden Bears tenacious defense kept the Lady Raiders off the scoreboard for much of the time. With 5:26 left, Canton’s Emma Rexford struck for a three-pointer to even the score 36-36. In the waning seconds of the game, Kali Frank took a shot for a three and it was good to give Canton the win and Section 10 Overall Title.
Jacobs was the game leading scorer and rebounder with 16 points and eight boards. She also contributed two assists and one steal. Manley followed with 13 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Erin Francis added four points, three boards and two assists, while Valancius contributed four points and two assists. Sidney Thompson supplied two points, two blocks and two boards and Sam Villnave chipped in two and pulled down two boards.
The Lady Raiders continue on to the New York State Quarter-Finals on Saturday March 9th at SUNY Potsdam where they will face a Section 2 or Section 3 Champion.
