Tea Boiling! Event Coordinator Danielle Oakes did a great job hosting her outdoor event. With temperatures dropping to -13 celsius, 6 teams worked together to get their water boiling. Danielle mentioned that all the materials were donated! Newspapers (fire starting material) were donated by Indian Time. A generous community member delivered wood and local restaurants helped get her the tins. 1st place winners were Dean George and Shane Cook with a time of 19:02. 2nd Place was PJ Burns and Mason Jackson with a time of 20:52. The remaining teams raced for third and was grabbed by Melissa and Jenson Johnson with a time of 32:04. Photo by Chrissy Jacobs.

Terry Mckendry wowed carnival goers. Saturday sure was packed full of Winter Carnival events. Those rushing to an outdoor activity, to an indoor one, and vice versa could take in the fast paced chainsaw carving of Terry Mckendry. Mr. Mckendry is a popular North Country wood carver. He’s been invited to previous Akwesasne winter carnivals and he brought his beautiful works of art and they were available for purchase. Those available were bears, eagles, owls, wolves and various woodland animals, some whimsical and others set in a forest theme. He worked throughout the day on his newest creations and completed two while set up at the St. Regis Recreation. One was a detailed bear holding a paddle and the other a sitting black lab. Super Hero Breakfast at Winter Carnival

The Akwesasne Winter Carnival opened Saturday with a Superhero Breakfast for the little guys and girls. Everyone who attended was treated to a pancake breakfast with sausage and bacon. There was hot cocoa and other beverages. Families all got to eat and then be entertained by Bellybuttons the clown, who was really funny. I never had the opportunity to really see her do her thing, until today that is, and the kids absolutely loved her. Bellybuttons began by cracking jokes and making swords, flowers, kitties, ray-guns, and other assorted balloonery, and told the parents jokes all the while. Following her warm up with the balloons, she put on a show on the stage, asking all the kids to come to the stage and sit “criss cross applesauce.” Two of The Incredibles made an appearance, (Really it was two of the young volunteers, Waverli Thompson, and Logan Francis-Mitchell) just in time to catch the show. Bellybuttons performed a joke filled magic show, taking volunteers from the audience, and judging by the laughter in the room, everyone, not just the kids, enjoyed the show. The magic show ended with Bellybuttons bringing out a live white bunny for the kids to pet, and even the littlest ones there got a turn. After the show, the kids who stayed played with balls, waged balloon warfare with balloon weapons, and crawled on and under the stage.
