A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Friday the kids were lucky and got a snow day. No school meant sleeping in and staying in jammies. They were so happy when they woke up on their own and realized that they had slept in and could stay home and play. Big Brother said, “Of all the days to use my homework pass I use it when I have extra days for it!” Two hours into the day we find out that one of his best friend/cousins was on his way over to play. Big Brother was ecstatic, he had wanted this buddy to come over the night before but it didn’t work out. They had a lot of fun and got along pretty well. After supper our guest wanted to sleep over. He got the ok from his mom and the boys were having a ball until I went around to shut off all the lights and sent them to bed.
The following morning they woke up as soon as the other did. They played outside in all the snow we got Friday. Even though it was still storming they were determined to walk the field next to our house. They looked like two lost little refugees wandering around in a blizzard. I had to call them in after twenty minutes because the wind made the temperature drop further. The boys came in with rosy cheeks and out of breath. They enjoyed some hot chocolate while taking in some Saturday cartoons. Before lunch we made our shopping lists for the day and had to send Big Brother’s cousin home. The boys ended up making more plans to hang out and Big Brother ended up at his cousin’s house for the afternoon and evening. Around the time I was expecting him to walk in the front door I got word that Big Brother wanted to sleep over and he already had extra clothes in his book bag he had taken along with him. This was a big deal; he rarely sleeps over at a friend’s house, which is why we usually have sleep overs at our house. He loves to hang out with his friends and cousins but if he is at their home he’s too shy to even ask for a drink. I stayed up until twelve thirty in case I got a phone call that he wanted to come home. It never came.
Sunday morning my husband went to get Big Brother. Once Big Brother heard we were headed tubing he wanted his cousin to come. That worked out perfectly because Little Brother did not want anything to do with leaving the house. The original plan was to go skiing as a family but I don’t know how much fun that would be with a four year old who was adamant about staying home. My husband stayed behind with him and I drove an excited boy back to his cousin’s so we could scoop him up on our way to Titus Mountain. We bought our tickets for tubing and by the time I parked the boys were already decked out in their snow gear and looking at me like I was an inconvenience. I dropped them off at the tubing hill while I went to park. Another ten minute wait while I found a parking spot and got my own snow gear on would have been torture. By the time I parked and met up with them they had already gone down the tubing hill four times. It was great that we got there so early too because there was barely anyone else on the hill. That meant close to no wait to get towed back up the hill. We had lunch at Titus and finished our afternoon of tubing before starting the drive home. We got home around four and Big Brother was exhausted! All he wanted to do was take a nap. Those two cousins hung out all day for their snow day and spent a night at each other’s house. By the time Sunday came rolling around they had their own inside jokes and initiated me into the toe jam club. I can’t believe they didn’t get sick of each other, I mean they are in the same class at school so they see each other all week. I’m happy for my boy, he has a buddy.
