PUBLIC NOTICE Iatathrona Raotiientahtsera (Couples PropertyAkwesasne Matrimonial Property Law)

The Working Task Group for the development of a matrimonial real property law has concluded the draft of the proposed law. The proposed name is Iatathrona Raotiientahtsera (Couples Property/Akwesasne Matrimonial Property Law).

The Working Task Group remitted the proposed draft law to Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Special Meeting for consideration at the next General Meeting. The February 12, MCA Special Meeting placed the Iatathrona Raotiientahtsera on the General Meeting agenda.

The next General Meeting is scheduled for March 6, 2013.

In accordance with the Law Enactment Procedural Regulation, section 6.1, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is providing this notice to Members at least twenty (20) days in advance.

At the General Meeting:

1. A summary of the law will be read to the Members attending the meeting.

2. The Working Task Group for the development of the proposed law will be available to answer any technical questions by the community.

3. The Council will, by majority vote, decide to either accept or reject the proposed law in principle. If accepted, the proposed law will be forwarded to Phase III Community Consultation, OR

4. If rejected, any Member may request that Council explain the reasons for rejecting the proposed law.

If the proposed draft law is accepted in principle by Council, copies will be available at the General Meeting.

Council will then direct the Akwesasne Justice Department to:

Send the draft proposed law to the printers;

Mail the printed copies to each household under the jurisdiction of Mohawk Council of Akwesasne;

Give notice of focus meetings in each of the three districts.

The Working Task Group will:

Conduct the focus meetings

Provide a summary as well as answer any questions Members may have.

The focus meetings will be recorded and any comments and/or recommendations will be submitted to Council, with recommended changes to the proposed draft law.
