A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Massena Lady Raiders hockey squad kicked off the “Massena Athletes Fight Cancer” fundraiser last Wednesday with a victory over the visiting Salmon River Shamrocks with a score of 5-1. Massena is having a great season with an overall record of 13-5. “The girls are working hard and it’s showing,” commented Coach Jennifer Gray.
The Lady Raiders showed their support for the fight against cancer by wearing pink jerseys and socks, as well as pick tape on their sticks and skate blades. The visiting Shamrocks also showed support with pink tape on their stick blades. Other Massena teams will be showing their support in the coming weeks when the varsity wrestling team will host Clifton-Fine on Feb. 1st at 6 p.m. On that same night the boys JV and varsity basketball teams will take on the OFA Blue Devils starting at 5:30 p.m. The girls JV and varsity will round out the fundraiser on Feb. 4 in a match up against Franklin Academy starting at 5:30 p.m.
The first goal of the game was an unassisted goal by eighth grader Katie MacCuaig at 11:18 in the first period. The Lady Shamrocks tied the score up at 2:26 in the second when Becca Leroux, who is usually the goalie, was called into service on the ice and finished off a play set up by Mallory Johnson.
Two minutes later the Lady Raiders answered back when Freshman Raechel Davis found the back of the net with assists going to MacCuaig and Chelsea Streeter. At 6:17 sophomore Emily Wilmhurst struck for a goal assisted by Mia Jermano and Ellen Greene, 37 seconds later junior Carlie Leary made it 4-1 when she connected with Streeter and Shannon Casey.
With 21 seconds left in the third period, sophomore Bailey Dillabough finished off a pass from Molly O’Connell to end the game 5-1.
Eighth grader Kyrsten Stone worked the crease for Massena with 18 saves for the win while Abby Grant turned aside 35 shots for the Lady Shamrocks.
Beekmantown 3, Massena 0
On Friday night the Lady Raiders hosted the Beekmantown Eagles for their last home game and senior night. The Lady Eagles skated away with a 3-0 shut out after losing their first game of the season earlier in the week.
The Red Raiders recognized two seniors, Mackenzie Young and Jaqlin Spinner, for their hard work and dedication to the girls’ hockey team. Young, who is a Captain this year, has played on the team since she was an eighth grader. Spinner has played for the Lady Raiders for four years.
On Wednesday Jan. 30th the Lady Raiders will host the first round of Section 10 playoffs in a match-up against Canton. These two teams split in regular season play. This is also the first time that Massena will play host in a play off round.
