North Franklin Shamrocks Win Winterblast Tourney

On Saturday January 19th the North Franklin Shamrocks Bantam Team played host to the 2013 Winterblast Bantam Hockey Tournament. The tournament featured the North Franklin Shamrocks, Chazy Flyers, Norwood/Norfolk Icemen and the South Glenville Rangers. The tourney started at 8:00 with North Franklin Shamrocks playing the Chazy Flyers. That game ended in a tie with both teams sharing the points.

Norwood/Norfolk played South Glenville with the Icemen downing the Rangers. North Franklin Shamrocks then played the Norwood/Norfolk Icemen and put a game in the win column. Chazy faced South Glenville for the Flyers first win. The Shamrocks played their third game against the South Glenville Rangers putting a second game in the win column and earning their entry into the championship game.

The Norwood/Norfolk Icemen won a close game against Chazy to face the Shamrocks in the Championship game. Even though the kids were tired they started off strong scoring a goal early in the first period that was answered shortly afterward. The Shamrocks scored again in the second and that was answered by the Icemen before the end of the second.

The Shamrocks scored the go-ahead goal late in the third and held onto the lead through several late charges by the Icemen. One empty net charge allowed the Shamrocks to take a shot on the empty net, just barely missing an extra goal. The Shamrocks held on as the clock ran down and won their home tournament by one goal.

The tournament wouldn’t have been successful without the help of the parents and volunteers that sold raffle tickets, worked the concession, scoreboard, penalty box and all the other jobs needed for a successful event. This win followed a second place finish at the Ogdensburg tournament the week before. Good Job kids!
