Sheila Marie David

AKWESASNE – Sheila M. David “Ka tsi tsa ka tse”, age 58, of 28 First Street, St. Regis, Que., passed away on Sunday afternoon, January 20, 2013, at the Cornwall Community Hospital, where she was admitted Tuesday evening with pneumonia. She had been courageously fighting cancer since last fall.

Sheila was born September 9, 1954, in Cornwall, ON, the daughter of John K. and Mary A. Barnhart David. She attended schools in St. Regis Village, St. Columban’s in Cornwall, and General Vanier High in Cornwall. Sheila also attended Kemptville Agricultural College, and St. Lawrence College, graduating with a Business Administration degree.

Sheila worked at the Akwesasne Freedom School, Native North American Travelling College, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, and G&L Service Center. She was the Director at the Home of the Aged in St. Regis, a Kana:takon District Chief from 1993-1997, a member of the Mohawk Council Membership Board, a member of the Recreation Committee in St. Regis, and a representative of Kanatakon on the Akwesasne Mohawk Board of Education. In her spare time she also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and cooking.

Sheila is survived by her three sons: Mose King and his companion Samantha Cook, Ryan King, and Jacob David, all of St. Regis; her mother, Mary David of St. Regis; four brothers, Kenneth David, of Akwesasne; Brian David and his companion, Leona of Cornwall Island; Matthew David and his companion Melissa of Akwesasne; and Greg and Tammy David of Cornwall Island; two sisters, Charlene David and Millie David, both of St. Regis, Que .; and two aunts, Rose Thompson and Esther Mitchell, both of Cornwall Island; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, John K. David, on October 6, 2010; her baby sister, Mary on October 25, 1951; her niece, Sara Beth, on May 18, 2006; and her baby nephew, Jeremy at birth on March 27, 2001.

Friends called Wednesday at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM. Cremation will follow.
