A Voice from the Eastern Door

The Personal Development and Employment Program

Lacey Arquette heard about the Personal Development and Employment Program from two people who had previously taken the course. They both said it was great and suggested she take it. Now, having completed the course, she recommends that others take it too.

Lacey said, “When I started the program I had no idea what I wanted to do, I felt stuck.”

Lacey explained that the program includes self-confidence and stress reducing techniques, personality/aptitude tests and it helps with interviews and teaches you how to present yourself. The class is taught by Linda Lalonde and is small so you become comfortable with everyone. The class also includes field trips, like they went to Thompson Island and learned about traditional medicines, the library, and St. Lawrence College to check out the campus. The class featured many speakers, including people who can help you after the program is over, for instance, with the different types of funding on the American and Canadian side.

As part of the program you are placed at a job for five weeks, but before that the class prepares you for the interview, including your resume and buying interview clothes. Lacey did her job placement at Indian Time. She said, “The weeks fly by because you feel so positive. Before my job placement I didn’t know where I wanted to go, maybe be a counselor or day care worker. I had to do a writing piece for Indian Time and an interview. I didn’t know I could write and then I wrote my first article and I was so happy I had everyone buy a paper, then I thought I could be a writer. Doing the job placement at Indian Time was a great experience and really opened my eyes to what I want to do. I saw the graphic design aspect of the paper and knew that’s what I want to do. In the future I want to get a job at Indian Time doing ads!”

Lacey now has a plan, “My goal is to take graphic design courses at Cornwall Career College. I would tell everyone to take this course. You learn that life’s not going to go anywhere if you stay in one spot, just keep moving!”

We really enjoyed having you work with us Lacey. Good luck with all your endeavors.
