A Voice from the Eastern Door
I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays. I know my boys did. Big brother had been counting down the days until Christmas break for two weeks before it arrived. All he wanted to do was stay home, sleep in and stay home some more--the ultimate homebody. Little brother is our bundle of chaos, who aside from loving to stay by our side, really loves to use all floor space for his little projects and playtimes. Of course we have to almost fight with him to pick up his stuff after he loses interest.
Christmas Eve came with the boys being so excited for following day. So excited in fact that they both ended up asleep by eight that night. It was funny, they jabbered on about Christmas and both crashed on a couch watching a movie. Our Christmas tree was in the corner between two couches, so I had one boy on each side of the tree. I felt like a secret agent as I brought all their gifts in from my car. Earlier in the evening I had to make three stops that night. One to my grandmother’s where I had stashed some presents. Another stop at my dad’s for more. Finally I hit up my mom’s, which was literally the mother lode. I had started shopping in October and so had she, so when we finished packing everything into my car there was barely enough room for me to drive. As I drove home squished into the driver’s side door I prayed to myself that a police officer wouldn’t pull me over for obstruction of view. I could see in front of me and out my side view mirror. All I needed was the clown car music to make this a comedic drive home.
Little brother woke up in the morning completely amazed by the sight of it all. He opened up two or three gifts before quitting. All he was interested in was playing with the ones he had seen so far and had no urge to get the ripping open of gifts done. Little brother was opening a gift now and then until bedtime. Big brother was the one who opened everything in a blur. They had a good day and I’m sure some of it had to do with them going to bed early and waking up late. Around eight thirty we woke the kids up because we couldn’t wait for them any longer. I spent the day mostly home cooking. I had my family come eat Christmas dinner at my house. I left for a little while to go down the road and eat at my cousin’s before cooking the rest of the day away. My husband and kids made their rounds with family before our own meal. I was glad that we got some snow too. It just doesn’t feel like Christmas break without lots of snow for the kids to play in.
Over the Christmas break my husband’s uncle came over and built a huge snow mountain with his backhoe. The boys were so excited watching it. They slide down it and there was another smaller one near it that my husband turned into an igloo for them. That was a big deal over the break. Big brother had a New Year’s Eve party and had some of his buddies over. During the day we went tubing at Titus and during the evening they had a Twister tournament. I forgot how fun that game is. Of course the igloo was part of the festivities. I was surprised it didn’t collapse with all the kids crammed in there. They went out there in the dark with a lantern. Once back inside they all fell asleep when they warmed up. Surprisingly when it was time to go back to school big brother was looking forward to it and couldn’t wait. Little brother on the other hand was crying two days before that he wanted to stay home with me longer. I know he really just wanted to stay home and play with his new stuff. We stayed home a lot over the last two weeks and the boys had tons of toy time.
