A Voice from the Eastern Door
The SRCS boy’s varsity basketball team opened its regular season with a loss to the Canton Golden Bears, 38-65 at home.
The Golden Bears burst out of the locker room and jumped out to an early 20-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Shamrocks struggled in the first half getting the ball through the hoop, but it wasn’t from lack of trying. The Golden Bear’s lead widened to 37-10 at the half.
The Shamrocks refused to relent and rallied in the second half to keep even with Canton as each team scored 28 points in the half.
The Shamrocks were led by Josh Hynes with 16 points followed by teammate Kiio Jacobs with 10 points. Hynes and Jacobs each netted a three-pointer while Dylan Whitehead added seven points for the Salmon effort.
Nick Archabald and Brian Wentworth (2 three-pointers) scored 14 points for Canton. Charles Ames generated 12 points and Evan Lapointe added 10 points. Scott Wight generated nine points including a three-pointer.
The next game for SRCS is at home against Malone.
The SRCS pep band was on hand to provide enthusiasm and spirit to the boy’s basketball game. The band is led by band teacher Cindy Healy and comprised of students in grades 6-12, staff and alumni. Seventh grader Rain Hill started the game by playing the National Anthem beautifully on her saxophone. The pep band will be at many of the girls and boys games this season to “rock” the gymnasium.
