Mary McGovern, age 98, of Syracuse, New York, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2012. She was predeceased by sisters Cecelia (Cook) Sam and Louise (Cook) Thomas. She was born on December 9, 1913, the daughter of Michael Cook and Angeline Skidders in St. Regis Village and raised in Akwesasne. Mary attended St. Regis Village School and also Bombay High School. She worked for Remington Rand and MacMillan Book Factory in Syracuse, NY. Mary enjoyed going to casinos, playing cards and reading newspapers.
Mary resided in Nedrow, NY for approximately 60 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald; a daughter, Doris Griffin and son-in-law, Richard Griffin. She is survived by her grandson Donald Griffin; her niece, Gloria (Carl) Fadden, Theresa Bessie Newvine Thomas and their children. Also survived by nephews Francis Sam and Michael Thomas. Predeceased by nephews Richard Thomas, Abe Thomas, Leonard Thomas, Edward Thomas, Louis Sam and Dennis Sam.
Services were held on Thursday, October 25, 2012, at Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, 4612 S. Salina Street, Syracuse, New York 13205.
Burial followed in Onondaga Valley Cemetery, 2500 Valley Drive, Syracuse, New York 13207.
