Black Friday Computer Shopper

Dear Monica:  I want to buy a new laptop on Black Friday. Could you tell me what to look for/brands that are best etc.? I will be using it for college, accounting software, and the usual Facebook and iTunes. I know nothing about computers!

Dear Black Friday Computer Shopper:  In your case, I suggest you ask your college for guidelines about the type of computer you should look for so that you can be sure you choose one that will work with the software that your college expects you to use.  Schools typically have a website with a search box at the top right so you can enter your question about your specific college courses and requirements.  A webpage dedicated to frequently asked questions might also be helpful for finding answers to your question.  If that does not work for you, the next step is to email, write, or phone your college and ask to speak with anyone that is familiar with the computer requirements for your college courses.  A brand new computer, laptop, or tablet that can handle all of the latest & greatest technologies, software, includes all accessories, service plans and installations will typically run from $1200.00 to $5000.00 USD.  Computers, Laptops, and Tablets that are great for simply social networking, email, and using online web apps will typically run anywhere from $50 to $1000.00.  Of course the $50 tablets that you find online are not for any kind of heavy-duty work.  The rest of this article will provide general guidelines for anyone that may not be experienced using the Internet as much.

The best general suggestions I can provide about choosing a computer for anyone that is not too familiar or comfortable with the task, is to get a piece of paper and pen because you are going to have to do some Internet research if you want to make a computer purchase you will be happy with.

On your paper, make a list down the left side of your local retailers that sell computers.  Your public library gives you free access to the Internet on their computers, with some basic Internet training to teach you how to use a web browser (for those that are not used to Internet browsing).  Now, add a ‘.com’ to each name on your list because you are going to visit each of their websites and take a look at what kind of computer offers they provide.  Make a note of the computers that catch your eye on your piece of paper next to the relevant retailer’s name. Include the price, ram, and any other features that stick out.  New people will want to find a complete computer package, laptop, or tablet (do not purchase just one piece of a computer and hope you can find a mouse or monitor later).

Review your paper list and compare the prices and features.  Circle at least three of your choices.  Now phone each of your local retailers, ask if they have it in stock, to verify the price, and if they offer setup and service plans.  New people will want to purchase the setup, installations, and service plans to protect their investments.  Try not to let everyone and anyone use your new computer when you are new, because the risk of it becoming infected or to just stop working the way you are accustomed to using it, is great.  If you have a large family and everyone wants to use a computer for social networking, watching videos, email and similar, you have a ton of options available for mid priced to super low priced tablets that range anywhere from $50.00 to $1000.00 USD.

If you have any questions about the Internet and Computers send them to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to answer them in our next issue.
