A Voice from the Eastern Door
The 2012 Section 10 Cross Country Championship was hosted by Gouverneur at the Gouverneur Country Club last Thursday.
The Potsdam girls captured the Class C title with Madi Dow leading the Sandstoners. Caroline Russell was the lone runner for the Shamrocks and came in ninth place with a time of 26:41.40. Her finish earned her a spot at the State Championship at Elba Meadows near Buffalo.
Russell was also awarded the prestigious 2012 Section 10 Travis Friedrich Award for the most outstanding sportsmanship for the whole Section 10. This award is named after a long time runner from Gouverneur who gave his life in defense of the United States in Afghanistan. His father wanted to keep Travis’s memory and spirit alive through this award.
“To be nominated for this award says a great deal about a person’s character, but to the unanimous choice of all the coaches in the section speaks volumes about the kind of competitor Caroline is,” noted Salmon River cross country coach Dan Mainville. Caroline was nominated by Norwood-Norfolk girls cross country team for the dedication she has shown to the sport and her attitude and respect she shows to other runners.
Heather Lauzon, Deanna Lauzon, Tahentahawi Chubb and Thomas Lauzon are past Salmon River runners who have received the Travis Friedrick Sportsman Award.
The Malone girls took the Class B crown.
In the boy’s race Gouverneur took top honors with 24 points. Potsdam was second with 40 points and Salmon River with 66 points took third place. Jayson Cook (21.20) took ninth place while teammate Brandon Bryington (22:05.9) took tenth place for Salmon River. Cook and Bryington will be running at the State meet on November 10 at Elma Meadows.
The Malone boys won the Class B title with Connor Gordon finishing first overall, and also set a new course record with a time of 17: 01.7.
