A Voice from the Eastern Door

Haudenosaunee Confederacy News

The Tuscarora started a very unique program on October 1, 2012. Tuscarorans will have the opportunity to “move” alongside those walking, running, hiking, biking, and canoeing on the 900 mile Migration Project. For every 30 miles you move about under your own power, you can receive one representative wampum bead. Participants can win prizes along their journey and share in the message about cultural survival and environmental shifts and the need to change how humans “move about.” In the end those who complete all 900 miles will receive a complete strand of real wampum beads. In about 26 weeks the participants will be leaving on their epic journey from the last Tusacarora battlefield during the Tuscarora War of 1711 to 1713. The last battle on March 22, 1713 marks the 90 plus year migration from their homeland to their Haudenosaunee relatives. This time in 2013 the participants will make the journey in 80 days. This re-enactment helps remind people that extinction can be prevented if we live simply by moving about, and that we are still here, “still picking berries, still planting, still hunting, still grinding corn, still raising families.” For more information on this epic event, contact the Tuscarora Environment, 5226A Walmore Road, Tuscarora Nation, via Lewiston, NY 14092 or call 716 297 9982 for more information.
