A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Akwesasne Eagles Youth Flag Football Club hosted their second annual youth flag football tournament this past Saturday at beautiful Generations Field. 10 youth flag teams from around the North Country participated.
Eagles Team 1 defeated Massena 1 in the finals 35-7 to defend their 2011 Title. Defense set the tone in the championship game and the Eagles came out flying- led by Dayne Thomas with 8 flags, including two pulls on key 4th down runs by Massena. Thomas had 20 flags over three tournament games to lead the Eagles defense.
Tehokwirate Barreiro scored three touchdowns in the championship game on four carries to lead the Eagles offense. He also had six flags on defense. Jett Jock scored one touchdown with seven flags on defense in the championship game and pulled 15 flags overall. Watsi Silver rumbled 80 yards for a score-- her 4th touchdown in three tournament games played.
During the tournament, Barreiro scored 7 touchdowns, Jett Jock and Watsi Silver scored 4 touchdowns each, Fire Swamp, Dayne Thomas, Ryder Sunday and Edward Jacobs all scored one touchdown each.
Team 1 remains undefeated this season with a 9-0-1 record.
Eagles Team 2 lost in the semis to Massena 1 on a score of 21-7. Team 2 was led to the semi-finals by the fleet footed running of Kade Herne, Trysen Sunday and Bleyton Hopps-Thompson. They finished 3rd place overall and are 6-3 for the season.
The two teams will face off against one another for the first time this season on Thursday September 26th at 5:30 pm at Generations Field.
The players and coaches thank all the fans who came out to support the teams this past weekend. They also thank Brian Herne at the Tribal Maintenance Department for fixing up the fields before the tournament with fresh paint.
