A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation announced that public access to its Visitors’ Center at the U. S. Eisenhower Lock for the 2012 navigation season ends Labor Day, September 3. Beginning Monday, August 27, 2012, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Center hours will be 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until it closes for the season and reopens Memorial Day weekend of 2013.
The Center has served as a major tourist attraction for North Country residents and tourists visiting the region since 1961, two years after the Seaway opened. This year more than 50,000 visitors entered the Center to view ships from dozens of nations that traverse the bi-national U.S.-Canadian inland waterway linking North America’s heartland ports as distant as Duluth, Minnesota and Thunder Bay, Ontario with overseas markets.
The Eisenhower Visitors’ Center is located off Route 37 in Massena, N.Y. and is accessible to the disabled. A north overlook parking lot is available for visitors to view ships after the Center is closed.
