A Voice from the Eastern Door

New Medication Drop Box Program at Tribal Police Station

No it’s not a mailbox. Bolted to the floor of the Tribal Police Department is a new medication drop box, and it’s available to use 24/7. Chief Andy Thomas said the target is unused narcotic pills, “legitimate users only take a few pills, like after a surgery. They don’t want to leave their unused pills lying around because they could become the victim of a home invasion” he explained. Thomas said it seems burglars skip the jewelry and go straight to the medicine cabinet.

And it’s not just burglars, family and friends could take pills as well. The drop box could also be used for expired medication and over the counter medication like aspirin. Det. Sgt. Matt Rourke noted that when the police had the give back program there was a big turnout. In fact, aside from big cities, they collected nearly the most weight in pills in the state. Rourke also explained that Massena PD recently got their drop box and have to empty it every 2-3 days.

Flushing pills down the toilet or down the sink carries the risk of getting into the water supply. The drop box program has very strict rules for disposal, with lots of paperwork, agencies and eventually an incinerator. Again, the drop box is available 24 hours a day so don’t be afraid to use it! If you have any questions call Andy Thomas or Matt Rourke.
