A Voice from the Eastern Door
Hogansburg, N.Y.
On June 30, 2012, Reverend Martin Cline announced, in consultation with Ogdensburg Bishop LaValley, “St. Patricks’ Church in Hogansburg would be closing its doors on June 29, 2013.” At present there are 27 families contributing envelopes toward the maintenance and upkeep of the church. We would need $500,000.00 to complete all present needed repairs on the church building and grounds. There are three parcels presently for sale. The rectory sale price is $95,000.00; the church building with the land it sits on has a sale price of $120,000.00; and the parking lot across the street, (which goes to the river), has a sale price of $20,000. Upon closing, this worshiping group will become part of St. Mary’s Church of the Fort, in Fort Covington, N.Y.” Early records show an original church was built on this site (St. Patricks’) in 1830, a subsequent fire in the late 1800’s resulted in the church being rebuilt into the present church building. The religious order known as the Sisters of Mercy, had their novitiate and convent in the original building occupied by the present day Mohawk School. A cemetery in the rear lot containing graves of nuns and priests cannot be sold and must be maintained by the parish.
