Akwesasne’s Very Own TJ Jackson Rocks ElvisFest

On Saturday, August 4th, the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino held its annual ElvisFest, which featured Akwesasne’s TJ Jackson, and let me tell you he played one heck of a show. Jackson performed from 12 to 2pm in the Rapids Café and did what he does best, entertained. Now to qualify, I would never consider myself an Elvis fan –sure I love some Elvis songs, but I would never have gone to see an Elvis impersonator. Now having gone, I can say without a doubt, Jackson’s show was fantastic!

Jackson performed Elvis classics such as: “Shake Rattle and Roll,” “Good Rockin’ Tonight,” “Wear Your Ring Around Your Neck,” “A Mess of Blues,” “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” “Trouble,” “Stuck On You,” “Return to Sender,” “Follow That Dream,” “Rubberneckin’,” and “Come On Everybody.”

After these songs, Jackson and his assistant changed into a blue jacket and began to perform songs from Elvis’ movie years, such as “Blue Hawaii.” The show was punctuated with facts about Elvis and his career, such as no living performer has recorded more songs than Elvis. In one movie, Jackson added they recorded 50 songs, which then needed to be picked through for the movie’s soundtrack.

At one point before his break, TJ called for volunteers and immediately Donna McRae and Pam Pierce were first to raise their hands. TJ then laid the surprise on them so to speak – they had to don a hula skirt and lei, dancing while Elvis sang “Rockahula” and “Viva Las Vegas.” The latter was where the whole lot danced through the crowd. Both volunteers had huge smiles plastered on their faces!

Following this, Elvis, or rather Jackson, took a break, only to return as Jumpsuit Elvis. Jackson performed several more classics, and besides McRae and Pierce, the sweetest moment of the show was when Elvis performed “Teddy Bear”. There was an elderly woman in the crowd, Audrey Maville, and when Jackson asked for favorite songs she said “Teddy bear,” which he dedicated to her. Along with the song, in a touching moment, Jackson gave her a teddy bear, and a kiss, and Maville was elated!

It was wonderful to see someone connect with the crowd as Jackson did. TJ Jackson has made me a fan, of both Elvis, and of him as well
