A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Saturday, August 5th, the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino held a classic car show, which took place during ElvisFest. The weather was gorgeous for the outdoor show. There were a number of entries from all over the area, and a broad range of cars and trucks.
Among the most interesting, and not often seen was a 1914 Model T “Depot Hack,” which was a Ford Model T Chassis, motor and tires, and a hand made carriage placed on top, made by a cabinet maker. This particular specimen was recreated using original parts and the original plans which were submitted to a cabinetmaker. The “Depot Hack” is considered the forbearer to the station wagon, and its purpose was to transport passengers from the train to the depot, with another hack following with all the passengers’ luggage. Adding to the interest factor were the owners who were in period dress.
The “Depot Hack” was not the oldest vehicle there; there was a 1909 Sears Model K Motor Buggy, which looked like a true motor carriage, and had lanterns for headlights.
My favorites were a sea foam green Chevy Bel Air and a 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS, both were immaculate. The care the owners invested in these vehicles was evident in every curve and shiny facet. One gentleman I talked to has owned his 1958 Bel Air since 1961, and while he was not a fan of all the polishing, the love he had for his car was evident.
