Dream BIG Read Program Extends Offerings for Youngest Readers Through August 9th

The Dream Big-READ program has decided to extend its offerings to Akwesasne’s youngest students an additional month. “There was a lot of interest in the youngest group,” said Robin Logan, who is teaching the program at the Akwesasne Library. Logan missed a day due to illness last week and a large group was at the library waiting for her. It was decided that the program should be extended through the ninth of August in response to the popularity the program received. This Thursday the kids got to use the brand new smartboard the library just received the night before. Kids got to play a few games Logan had prepared and the theme of today’s lesson was nocturnal animals. The new smartboard the library received is much smaller and more portable than the original and there is intent to make use of this incredible asset much more.

Today the kids played two games, one where they picked the name of a random nocturnal animal from three choices underneath, as well as a game that allowed the children to work on writing letters. The much larger smartboard the library originally had will be making its new home at the Akwesasne Freedom School soon.

The Dream Big-READ program for the pre-k through first graders will run Thursday at 10 am, with a snack provided, and will run in the same format as before, with either a craft or smartboard game, as well as a book and snack. Logan said, “I try to alternate between a craft and the smartboard, but the kids really seem to like it, so I’ll have to make some more games for the smartboard.”
