Akwesasne Women Warriors Win Gold in Whitby “Chicks with Sticks” Tournament

The Akwesasne Women Warriors travelled to Whitby, Ontario this past weekend July 6th-8th to participate in the Annual Chicks with Sticks tournament. The first game on Friday was a loss to Toronto Stars by a score of 6-3. Scoring for the Warriors was Shaydi Oakes with 2 goals and Heather Square with one goal. The girls would like to blame this on road legs!

Saturday the Women Warriors played Sherbrooke and defeated them on a score of 6-0. Scoring was Heather Square with one goal, Waheshon Lazore with 2 goals, 2 assists and Cheyenne Lazore with 3 goals and 2 assists with the shut out going to Sierra Sharrow.

Game #3 the Semi Finals was a sudden death overtime victory by 3-2 over the Whitby Rush. Scoring was Heather Square with 1 goal assisted by Shaydi Oakes, Sara Thompson with 1 goal and Waheshon Lazore with the game-winning goal assisted by Cheyenne Lazore. This game put the Women Warrior’s into the championship game playing Toronto Stars once again. The game was close the whole game with the Warriors scoring early in the first period. Orenda Herne scored a goal assisted by Cheyenne Lazore. Toronto scored late in the second period, but the Women Warriors came back with a goal by Cheyenne Lazore, assisted by Sara Thompson. In the last 2 minutes left in the game to ensure the win, Cheyenne Lazore scored unassisted to make the score 3-1 over the Toronto Stars.

The Women Warriors will be traveling to Peterborough July 22nd to play in their annual tournament and to end the season the Warriors will be participating in the 2012 Ontario Lacrosse Association Sr. Women’s Box Lacrosse Provincials in Toronto.
