Theresa Ann Square

AKWESASNE – Theresa Ann Square, 51, of 460 Island Road, Cornwall Island, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 1, 2012 at Ottawa General Hospital, where she had been a patient since Tuesday. Theresa had been in failing health since November.

Theresa was born on March 17, 1961 in Rochester, New York. She was adopted and raised by her grandparents, Frank and Alice Garrow Square. She attended St. Regis Mohawk School and graduated from Salmon River Central School. She attended the College of the Canyons in California for two years.

Theresa worked for Mohawk Council of Akwesasne for 26 years along with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and notably with the Boys and Girls Club in Canyon County, California. Most recently, she was the Manager of the Anowarakowa Arena on Cornwall Island. Theresa enjoyed all sporting activities, especially softball and volleyball. She was a constant volunteer for various organizations throughout the community, serving as the past president of the Akwesasne Minor Hockey, a member of the Executive Board of the Upper Canada Minor Hockey, and the Akwesasne Area Management Board.

She is survived by her loving husband, Eugene David; her son, Aundray of Rochester; her mother, Margaret Veronica “Bunny” Cook of St. Regis; her sisters, Sallie “Donnie” Square of St. Regis; Monica “Nikki” and Alex Sharrow of Cornwall Island; Erica and Darrell Barnes of Massena; Thena Marie Russell and Matt Murphy of Norwich; Samantha Leigh Cook of St. Regis; her brother, Gerald W. Cook, II, of Chicago; her godchildren, Tori Elizabeth Russell and Jari Allyson Thompson; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her beloved dogs, Memphis and Winston.

She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Alice Square.

Friends called at the Akwesasne Homemakers, River Road, Snye beginning Wednesday, July 4th until a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, July 6, 2012 at the St. Regis Catholic Church. Burial, following cremation, will be in Kateri Cemetery.
