June 19, 2012 - New York State Police Captain Robert S. LaFountain, Malone Village Chief Chris Premo and District Attorney Derek Champagne announced a County-wide sweep today aimed at the distribution of Controlled substances and illegal sales of prescription narcotics in Franklin County.
District Attorney Champagne also announced that ten of those arrested or who are being sought are currently the focus of a joint investigation with the Franklin County Department of Social Services. These individuals are believed to have been receiving Medicaid benefits at the time of their sales. Champagne stated that several of the defendants are suspected of selling their prescriptions, which were provided for by taxpayer funds.
District Attorney Champagne said “It is unfortunate that the changes to the Rockefeller Drug laws would appear to have opened new markets for Heroin and Cocaine in rural upstate New York, as was evidenced by recent arrests linking Heroin and Cocaine in the County to Springfield, Massachusetts and Newark, New Jersey.”
