A Voice from the Eastern Door

The 2012 Senior Games

The 2012 Senior Games kicked off on Monday May 14th at the Tsi Tetewatkens Center with opening statements by Judy Cole. There were booths set up with various health topics like smoking, foot care, breast cancer, men’s health, and there was also a blood pressure and sugar diabetes clinic. Theresa Gardiner went through a head to toe checklist.

The poker walk was the first event of the games followed by a red solo cup-stacking contest. After, Jamie led the seniors in Zumba and there were so many participants they had to move outside, which wasn’t all that bad because the weather cooperated.

Everyday started with breakfast and socialization, which as Judy Cole said in her opening statement, the chance to socialize with elders from all parts of Akwesasne was one of the major goals of the senior games. It also gives elders a chance to exercise their bodies and minds. Health topics were also a part of every day. Over the week they enjoyed many events like bike riding, line dancing, bowling, swimming and horseshoes. The games ended on Friday back at Tsi Tetewatatkens Center with awards and fiddling. A list of winners will be in next weeks paper.
