A Voice from the Eastern Door

Bingo Winners, CKON Employees Can’t Cash Checks

Samantha McMillon Wilkinson

On May 14, 2012 a community meeting was held in regards to the current state of the CKON Board of Directors. A petition had been drawn up at a previous meeting for the purpose of dissolving the board, creating an interim board - which would create new policies, and hold an election for a new board. Board members were hand delivered a letter signed by the interim board members, as well as a copy of the petition, to inform them of the changes. According to a group of CKON employees, the interim board members went to the Bank of Montreal and Community Bank in Fort Covington to remove the board members names from the account and add the interim board members. The old board members allegedly visited the same banks and asserted that the interim board members do not have rights to CKON accounts. It seems as a result of these events, as of Wednesday May 23, 2012, CKON accounts are now frozen. Several bingo winners were unable to cash the checks for their winnings. CKON employee checks are signed by board members and dated for Thursday, May 24, but they are unable to cash them due to the frozen accounts. Nevertheless, there are CKON employees working, as I type this, knowing that they will not be able to cash their checks. They proclaimed “we continue working because we work for the community” and stated they will be open tomorrow for regular hours. The community should get involved not only because of bingo, but because CKON is a COMMUNITY OWNED station. The radio station is for you - the community. A copy of the minutes from the May 14th meeting is printed above as well as a copy of the letters delivered to the board members. Due to the fact that it is Wednesday and the paper is in the middle of layout there will be more in depth articles concerning this situation in the next edition of Indian Time.

CKON employees apologize for this inconvenience.
