A Voice from the Eastern Door
Arcane Belief is an original, all local, signed band. Cory Jacobs is lead vocal and bass player, Buck Cook is lead guitarist, Cory White plays rhythm guitar and piano, and Duane Greenfield is the drummer. It started in the summer of 2008 when Cory White called Buck about some songs he was working on. After quite the rollercoaster ride these two put the band together. Cory White sent demos out to anyone who would take them and the demos only had four or five acoustic songs. Tate Music Group heard the songs “In Denial” and “Traveling Man”-a song Buck describes as: “if Bob Dylan and Tom Petty had a baby.”
Arcane Belief was signed last year by Tate Music Group who are located in Oklahoma. Buck described the transformative journey to Oklahoma in June 2011 as one that would unite the band. It is true that 28 straight hours in a car with someone will bring you close together. That’s how long it took the band to make the 1,500 mile trip to Oklahoma to record their debut CD. Add the trip back and the fact that in Oklahoma they shared an apartment for a week and you end up with a bond as strong as brotherhood. On the drive they went through Joplin, Missouri after the tornados hit and saw the devastation. On the way home, they stopped in Memphis, TN and visited Beale Street, what Buck called the music mecca. He recounted the thought the band shared; “right there we knew who we were, and that we were right where we were supposed to be.” It was these shared experiences that pulled the band together.
Their debut CD titled “Wrong Side of Salvation” was released in January. The music resonates because the lyrics are relatable to people from all walks of life, and the instrumentals are transitional in that they can be played both full band and acoustic. Cory White wrote the amazing lyrics for their debut CD, but Buck explained that finishing a song is a whole band effort. He said that songs are like children, and being in the band is like being in a relationship. The band lives and plays by a few mottos. “All of us together is better than us alone, you have to be a fan of the guys you play with, and it is always ‘the band’ not ‘my band’.”
They have played in Missouri at the Sullivan County Music Fest and in Manhattan at Sullivan Hall. They have played at several benefits and are always glad to play at more, or play just about anywhere. Buck expressed that, “we are a Native band, but we are not a band just for Natives.” You can find them on Facebook, reverbnation.com and tatemusicgroup.com. You can get the CD on itunes.com, rhapsody.com, cd-universe.com, Emusic.com, Amazon.com, tatemusicgroup.com, and various shops around Akwesasne.
They have several upcoming live performances. The first one is on June 8th at the Snye Rec. in a variety show. The next is on June 30th in Clayton NY. It’s the Keith Brabant annual memorial concert and they will be headlining the show. On July 12th, they will be opening the Cornwall Kinsmen liftoff festival. They’ll be sharing the stage with Cornwall band “Playing with Diana” and Juno award winning band “Sloan”. The headliner will be the great Canadian band Big Wreck. Then on July 21st they are playing at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino for the 10th annual Iron Workers celebration. Buck’s advice to others is “you are never too late to start something, and our only limitation is ourselves.” He said we are excited to press on and are currently working on new material as well as with a promoter out of central New York to get gigs there. Buck’s future world-wide famous quote: “It’s always good to chase your dreams, but it’s better when you catch a few.”
