A Voice from the Eastern Door
Raider Laxmen Avenge Earlier Loss.
Revenge can be sweet if it brings success and the Raiders were successful when they hosted the Canton Bears on a wet Mike Nicholas field. The first time the two teams met; Massena left Canton with a 16-0 loss. The tables were turned and this time Canton left town with a 17-10 loss.
There was also an individual sweet success triumph as senior attackman Zach Hopps led the Raider offense past the Bears and in doing so he broke the Massena lacrosse boy’s school record for all-time scoring. He went into the contest needing eight points to break Taylor Elsner’s 234 point record set in 2010. Hopps produced six goals and three assists to bring his scoring total to 236 points in his four year high school career.
The Raiders had a 6-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and ended the first half 9-6. After the half Massena went to work and scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter to open up the lead.
Rhodes Tarbell and Grayson Phillips each supplied three goals and one assist. Ross Driscoll added three more goals while Jordy Mitchell produced one goal and five helpers. Sako Rourke rounded out the scoring with a goal while Josh Blair posted an assist.
Jesse Gilbert led the Bears with four goals and two assists. Jack Elberty (1 assist) and Payton VanBibber netted two goals apiece. Tanner Sanderson and Eb Foote each added a goal while Sean Rodee recorded an assist.
Massena goalie, Kyle Cook, stopped 10 shots while Jeff Hammond (2 saves) and Nate Gibson (8 saves) combined efforts in the Canton net.
Massena improves it’s record 8-4 overall and 6-4 in the NAC.
