Massena Curfew

A strategy to hinder juvenile crime and improve quality of life may have youth off Massena streets at 10 p.m. Officials are gathering crime data, such as vandalism, to show that the curfew is needed. Under the village ordinance it is proposed that residents under the age of 16 cannot be out between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless accompanied by an adult. A violation would be hand delivered by the code enforcement office. Enforcement is still a few months away.

Canada’s Last Penny

The Canadian penny will no longer be produced. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty pressed the button that stamped the last Canadian penny, which will go to a museum, at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg last Friday. The last one million pennies are special collector products that will be available to the public. The move seems smart because a penny actually costs 1.6 cents to make and many people do not use them anymore. This fall the mint will stop distributing the coin to financial institutions.

Salmon River Central School

Superintendent Jane Collins of the Salmon River Central School District wishes to extend her heartfelt condolences to the family of Suzanne Sarnoski Bilow. Mrs. Bilow was a teacher at Salmon River Central for 22 years.

Suzanne Sarnoski Bilow began her career teaching Spanish at Salmon River Central School on September 1, 1989. Mrs. Bilow graduated from SUNY Binghamton in May of 1989 with a Masters in Spanish. In 1990, she was appointed as Special Olympics Advisor for the 1990-91 school year. Since that time, she has also been appointed as Yearbook Co-Advisor and Spanish Advisor.

During the 2006-07 school year, Mrs. Bilow and her husband, Wayne, hosted an exchange student Gustavo Gonzalez Garcia from Colombia, who attended Salmon River Central School that year. The Bilows became very close to Gustavo’s family and in the 2008-09 school year, Gustavo’s sister, Laura, stayed with the Bilows and attended Salmon River Central School.

“Suzanne was a passionate teacher who cared deeply about her students as if they were her own,” relayed High School Principal Alison Benedict.

Suzanne will be truly missed by the students and staff at Salmon River Central.

Suzanne Bilow was an amazing person. She welcomed my sister and I into her family. She helped both of us at Salmon River and in our college careers. She will always be remembered. God rest her soul.
