A Voice from the Eastern Door

Mark Kawesoton Light

Mark Kawesoton Light is a 55-year-old artist from Akwesasne. Mark is the grandson of Beatrice Deer Jacobs – who will turn 100 next month – and he is also the son of Darlene and Peter Sunday.

Mark has been married to his wife going on 26 years, with two sons, 5 grandchildren, one of which he is raising, and another one on the way.

Mark believes in our natural ways as human beings, and his work involves traditional aspects of our culture “reflecting where we come from, and the people we are.” Mark always tries to encourage our people “to always know where you came from, never doubt who you are; be proud of who we are.”

Mark has been a Sundancer for 30 years, and he does what he can to help people, for instance by regularly holding large sweats at his home. He also helps people through his involvement in the Medicine Teepee Society and using social media, he has begun to speak up about issues facing our community.

Mark typically works with acrylics and digital mediums. He has been doing quite a bit of logo design work for various departments of MCA and SRMT. In addition, he has wonderful work for sale.

In his free time he enjoys fishing and being on the boat.
