In September of 1984, the Mohawks of Akwesasne, along with Cree and Ojibway elders from Central and Northern Ontario, collaborated their efforts to put on a sweet grass healing ceremony for Pope John Paul II.  Ernest Benedict is a well-respected elder that was considered a lifelong traditional and he was also a devoted assistant minister of the Methodist Church.  It is only fitting that the honoring of Pope John Paul II would come from all walks of Native life.
