A Voice from the Eastern Door
Arnold Printup III and Bruce Boots competed again this year in the 40th Annual Raisin River Canoe Race, the longest paddling event in Eastern Ontario on April 22, 2012. They started paddling the 24 kilometers (16 miles) in St. Andrews West and finished in Williamstown. But they didn’t just paddle, they had to survive the rapids and shoot at the Martintown dam. They didn’t portage at the dam, they did the 60-foot drop and then shot the rapids.
They placed in the top third, coming in 32nd place overall. In the Men’s Rec. division they placed 16th with a time of 3:07:09. Categories included Pro Class, 17’ Open, Men’s Recreation, Women’s Recreation, Mixed Recreation, Adult/Youth, Students (Boy, Girls & Mixed), Kayaks and Masters.
Bruce said the river was very shallow in spots and a couple of times they had to jump out and pull their canoe over the rocks.
Arnie and Bruce encourage more from Akwesasne to participate in this canoe race next year, to walk the walk!
