A Voice from the Eastern Door
• This coming weekend, April 23rd, will be Six Nations Sing at the Oneida Nation territory near London, Ontario. The Sing will start at noon with lunch and then the different singing groups doing new verses to the women’s song.
Of course, dinner is served and then a big social in the Oneidas spacious log cabin longhouse. Enjoy.
• There will be no condolence practice this weekend due to the Six Nations Sing. A reminder: a “big” condolence is scheduled for April 30th at the Tonawanda Seneca Longhouse for 9:00 a.m.
• A Standing Committee meeting (Repatriation and Funerary) for Tuesday, April 26th at the Faithkeepers School in Allegheny. The agenda items include a discussion on the Denver Museum conference held in February, a video-conference on human remains, a discussion on the unidentifiable items from the Denver Museum and then a review of the regulations and laws.
• The Haudenosaunee Leadership and Tribal Council leadership met in Rochester on Wednesday, April 13, 2011. The meeting was to discuss taxes the State is trying to impose on the Haudenosaunee traditional and tribal communities.
The leadership agreed to work collectively to stop the State’s imposing taxes.
• The Haudenosaunee Documentation Committee met on Friday, April 15th in the Oneida territory near London, Ontario. Attending the meeting from the Mohawk Nation was Curtis Nelson. The focus of the meeting was the Haudenosaunee ID cards. After several hours of discussion on the cards, the committee decided to move the issue of the ID cards to the forefront. The Haudenosaunee ID cards will begin processing within the next 3 months.
