Some people may have thought what Kanietekeron did was extravagant. You could say he took the saying “actions speak louder than words” to heart. But allegedly driving a backhoe through a fence to dig up a shallow grave of toxic waste was an action that will most likely produce the desired effect-publicity. In fact, one of the most effective ways to stop corporate crimes is the use of publicity. If there is one thing as important as profits to a corporation it is their public image. Of course this is because public image correlates with profit, and negative publicity almost always negatively impacts a corporation.
Now will this incident stop many people from buying GM vehicles? Probably not. However, it will keep the issue of the environment, the toxins and what impact they may have had, or are having on the nearby residents in people’s minds. And we are not the only ones talking about it, other local news agencies are running the stories. So, we can hope it will keep people digging for the truth both figuratively and literally.
Truth be told, they would have been better off giving him a warning and letting him walk away. Because really, from that day in August, to February when he was arraigned, to now when two of his charges were dropped, to the future and whatever the criminal mischief charge brings, it was, and will be in the news every time. And every time we will remember why he did it, and our mind will tie the name G.M. with toxic waste.
