A Voice from the Eastern Door
Ironmen vs. Demons in CLAX Championship
The arena was packed as leftover fans from the first semi-final game between the Ohsweken Demons and Brampton Inferno stayed to find out who their team would face in a championship game dubbed The Creators Cup. The Demons had narrowly made it through with a 17-16 win over the Inferno and awaited the winner between the 1st place Durham Turfdogs and the 4th place Iroquois Ironmen.
Throughout the season the Ironmen were unable to defeat the Turfdogs. They came close in a couple games but weren’t able to come up with the win. Ironmen players and fans saw the Sunday afternoon game as the opportunity to finally defeat them and to secure their spot in the final.
The first quarter started with end-to-end action. The first goal came with just under three minutes left to play as Blue Hill scored for the Ironmen. A minute after the Ironmen opened up the scoring, the Turfdogs came back to tie it up. After 15 minutes of play, the score remained tied at 1.
Second quarter play saw the Ironmen take control as they scored 8 goals. Their defensive prowess was showcased as they held the Turfdogs to 1 goal. Andrew Lazore and Tekari Thompson each had an assist in the offensive attack.
As students from I.L Thomas had a smoke dance competition during the 12 minutes of half time, one player for the Turfdogs stayed on the floor. Back up goalie Brandon Noble was seen warming up to take the place of starter Gary Muzzin, which wasn’t a surprise as he let in a couple weak goals.
Although the Turfdogs opened the scoring in the third, the Ironmen kept their foot on the pedal as they came up with 5 goals. Tekari Thompson and Hiana Thompson had assists and Brandon Swamp had a goal.
The Ironmen had a commanding 14-4 lead going into the final 15 minutes of play. Turfdogs were able to score but not enough to put a damper on the hard work that the Ironmen had played with throughout the game. Andrew Lazore scored 1 of the 3 goals off a pass from Hiana Thompson with just under 4 minutes to play.
The Ironmen took control of the game in the second quarter and never looked back as they were determined to make it to the final. Because of that determination, Brandon Swamp, Tekari Thompson and Andrew Lazore will travel another 5 ½ hours to play in one last game as the Ironmen look to become the Canadian Lacrosse League Inaugural Season Champs as they take on the Ohsweken Demons at the ILA on April 7th at 2:00 pm.
For those who want to cheer on their fellow Akwesasronon but are unable to attend the game in Six Nations, there will be a live broadcast at http://www.inlaxwetrust.com.
