Mocs Extend Win Streak to Three with 16-6 Win Over Coker

March 31, 2012-The Moccasins had ten different players score at least one goal en route to a 16-6 win over Coker College Saturday afternoon at Bryant Stadium. With the win Florida Southern extends its winning streak to three games and improves to 6-5 overall, while Coker falls to 2-10.

The Moccasins struck first, as Dan Krispinsky won the opening faceoff. On the ensuing possession, Brad Fretti picked up a ground ball, drove down the field, and scored his first goal of the season to give the Mocs a 1-0 lead. Coker responded as Timothy Smith connected with Keith LaClair to even the score 1-1. Minutes later, Florida Southern took advantage of a Cobras’ penalty as Ricky DeMicco scored a man-up goal to give the Mocs a 2-1 lead. Dane Sorensen and Shane Tompkins scored back-to-back goals to extend the lead to 4-1. A late goal by Steve Marciano cut the lead to 4-2 after the first quarter.

The Moccasin defense cracked down in the second quarter holding Coker scoreless on five shots, while forcing eight turnovers. Less than a minute into the quarter Adam Ismaeil connected with Sorensen for his 21st goal of the season. Brendan Mykle-Winkler, making his first start of the season, scored three straight goals to extend the Mocs lead to 8-2. His third goal came as he picked up a ground ball, off Sorensen’s shot, in front of the cage and put it past the goalie. Jon Freda scored an unassisted goal in the closing seconds to give the Mocs a 9-2 lead at the break.

The Moccasins’ offensive attack continued in the third quarter as Sorensen and Mat Thompson scored back-to-back goals. Sorensen and Thompson are tied for the team lead with 22 goals each. The Cobras responded, as LaClair found John Bretton twice for goals and cut the lead to 11-4 after the third quarter.

Florida Southern scored four unanswered goals to start the fourth quarter and take a 15-4 lead. After a Cobras’ goal, Jeff Shields’ shot connected with the back of the cage for his first goal of the season. Coker netted one more goal for the 16-6 final.

The Moccasins outshot the Cobras 39-25, while winning the ground ball battle 35-20. Krispinsky went 13-19 on faceoffs and Andrew Almansberger made ten saves in the win.

Mykle-Winkler and Sorensen lead the Mocs with three goals apiece, while Freda tallied two goals and two assist.

The Moccasins return to action Wednesday when they host conference foe Florida Tech at Bryant Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
