Leaders of the Class of 2012

Salmon River Secondary School Principal, Alison Benedict, is proud to announce the top scholars for the Class of 2012.  Sean Godard has been named the Valedictorian for the Class of 2012.  He is the son of Girard Godard of Cornwall, Ontario and Gerry and Linda McElwain of Bombay, New York.  Sean’s paternal grandmother is Marie Godard of Cornwall, Ontario and maternal grandfather is Leon Richards of Bombay, New York.  Sean is a member of the National Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society.  While in high school, Sean has participated in golf, cross country and indoor track.

Sean has received the following scholarships and awards: the University of Rochester Bausch and Lomb Science Award, Rochester Institute of Technology Computing Medal Award, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal Award and the St. Lawrence University North Country Augsbury Scholar Award.

Sean participated in the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership conference during his sophomore year.  HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students.  HOBY programs provide youth selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences.

Sean also applied to and was accepted to participate in the National Grid Pipeline Program.  The Pipeline is a six-year development program that creates a recruitment pathway, beginning after junior year in high school, for promising students who want to become engineers. Each year, sixty high school juniors who have strong grades and interest in studying engineering in college will be accepted into the Pipeline. If they study engineering in college, keep their grades up, and participate in ongoing activities – including a paid internship at National Grid, as well as educational job shadowing and mentoring activities – they will be fast-tracked for fulltime employment at National Grid upon graduation.

Throughout high school, Sean has participated in band and Pep band.  He attended Clarkson University’s Project Challenge and St. Lawrence University’s Talented Juniors Programs.  He has also served as a student volunteer for the school’s technology support department, was a crew member for the school musical and is a Peer Leader in the Sources of Strength program.

Sean plans on attending St. Lawrence University in the fall.

Named as Salutatorian for Salmon River’s Class of 2012 is Anna Kelly.  Anna is the daughter of Bruce and Jocelyn Kelly of Bombay, New York.  Anna’s paternal grandparents are Benjamin and Betty Kelly of Hogansburg, New York and maternal grandparents are John and Marilyn Furnia of Fort Covington, New York.  Anna is a member of the National Honor Society, where she serves as the organization’s Secretary. She is also the President of the senior class, a member of the yearbook staff, and Rachel’s Challenge.  Anna is a Peer Leader for the Sources of Strength program and participated in the Talented Juniors program held at St. Lawrence University.  Anna has been on the Girls Varsity soccer, basketball and softball teams for the past three years.  She has acted as the team captain for soccer and basketball.  Anna has been awarded Second Team All- Northern selection for soccer, basketball and softball and was a Salmon River Central School Athlete of the Month.

Anna has  received the following scholarships and awards:  the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award from the University of Rochester, The University of Albany Multicultural Achievers Program recognition, Math Honor Society, Outstanding Earth Science student award, Outstanding achievement in Mohawk language, Academic All Northern in soccer, basketball and softball.  Anna also has been awarded the Presidential Diversity Scholarship from St. Lawrence University and the St. Catherine of Siena Scholarship presented at Providence College.

Anna does a variety of community service activities associated with St. Mary’s Youth Group.  She volunteers at the Fort Covington Senior Citizens Center and attended mission trips to New Jersey and Boston.  Anna has interned with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, located at the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C.

Anna has been accepted for admission to the following post secondary institutions: Dartmouth College, College of the Holy Cross, Hamilton College, Providence College, Union College, St. Lawrence University and Middlebury College.

Also achieving a cumulative average of 90% or above is:

Noah Bero, son of Gary and Melissa Bero of Hogansburg, New York.  Noah plans on attending SUNY Canton, majoring in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Allison Boots, daughter of Peter and Melanie Burns of Hogansburg, New York.  Allison will attend SUNY Potsdam and major in Business Management.

Errolynn Bradley, daughter of Brett Bradley and Meg McElwain Bradley of Bombay, New York.  Errolynn plans on attending either SUNY Plattsburgh or Niagara University to major in Special Education and/ or psychology.

Kara Grant, daughter of Michael and Heather Grant of Bombay, New York.  Kara will attend SUNY Potsdam in the fall.

Matthew Healy, son of James and Cindy Healy of Fort Covington, New York.  Matt is going to attend Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania.  He plans on majoring in Criminal Justice.

Heather Jock, daughter of Robert and Brenda Jock of Constable, New York.  Heather plans on attending SUNY Canton and majoring in Nursing.

Leslee Loran, daughter of Aaron and Karen Loran of Akwesasne.  Leslee plans on attending the University at Albany in the fall.

Jessica McCray, daughter of Shane and Kim McCray of Bombay, New York.  Jessica plans on attending college and majoring in Veterinary Science.

Teesha Mitchell, daughter of Dion Mitchell and Mary Jacobs of Akwesasne.  Teesha will be attending either LeMoyne College or SUNY Plattsburgh, majoring in Nursing.

Emma Phillips, daughter of Robert and Sharon Phillips of Hogansburg, New York.  Emma will be attending St. Lawrence University in the fall.  She is going to major in Environmental Studies.

Zoe Thompson, daughter of Harvey Thompson of Akwesasne.  Zoe plans on attending either Syracuse University or the University at Albany in the fall.
